Why do I design interfaces?

I get asked this question a lot. Some people don't see what's so fun about UX/UI design. The answer is a little bit selfish actually. I just love it. I have so much fun doing it. I love the challenge of it. Creating something that someone else is going to use. The person must be able to completely understand what it is that was made, how it works AND be able to use it to accomplish their goals.

All of this without me being there to explain any of these things or knowing all of the details. It's like a complex puzzle to me. A puzzle where you don't know beforehand what the final picture is going to look like, having to make the pieces yourself and not having just one possible solution.

Despite all this difficulty, still being able to make all of the pieces fit together is bliss. Seeing people use whatever you made, with a big smile on their face, that is why I love my job. It's worth any struggle I might come across.

Who am I?

As a kid I wanted a dog really bad but I wasn't allowed one at the time. Instead, my parents bought me a Gameboy and I loved that thing. Some people lose themselves into the fiction of a book but I have the same with games. I've spent many a rainy day trying to beat the puzzles that game designers threw at me. This evolved until I started playing other games like World of Warcraft.

This was fun but quite soon I got a bit frustrated with the default UI that was offered so I started tweaking it. Fortunately the game was unusually open for players to change the UI. It wasn't long before I would spend more time tweaking the UI than I was actually playing the game. Creating a good UI was a whole new challenge for me.

It was soon after this that I had to make a decision about my future and what I would study for. Jobs take up a lot of your lifetime, so to me, it had to be something I was good at, but also liked to do. This is how I decided I wanted to create user interfaces for a living.

My Goals

I want my work to enable users to be the best they can be.
I want to craft products that show it was made by people who cared.
I want to spread the concept of dynamic interface thinking.
